Unique single material solution delivers novel interior for Mercedes C-Class

A single material solution from Borealis has enabled Daimler Chrysler to create a high quality interior for its new Mercedes C-Class. Daplen? EE188HP, a thermoplastic olefin compound (TPO) has been used on all visible, injection moulded interior trims of the C-Class interior, replacing the need for several polymers to deliver the desired concept. The simplification of development and manufacture coming from a single material solution offers distinct advantages.

Medical tubing is becoming tinier and more complex

Medical tube is becoming ever smaller and thinner while adding new features like high-tech material combinations, more wire braiding/wrapping, and heat-shrink sheathing for strength and kink resistance. Smaller diameter, thinner walls, and more complex structures are the latest in medical tubing.

Masterbatch market in a developed economy

The European masterbatch industry is the largest in the world both in terms of production and demand. In 2006, masterbatch manufacturers in Europe manufactured close to 1 million tons (about 960,000 tons) of masterbatches, while the market demand was just over 800,000 tons. Europe is thus a significant net exporter of masterbatches.

Special polyamides are expected to grow much faster than polyamide 6 & 6.6

Special types of polyamide such as polyamide 11, 12 and 6.12 are expected to grow at much faster rates globally, as compared to conventional polyamides 6 and 6.6. While polyamides, including fiber, have shown an overall average growth of about 3-4%, thermoplastic engineering polyamide has shown almost 7-8% growth, and polyamide film has shown even higher growth of about 10%. Fiber, accounting for about 60% share of the total polyamide market, grew very modestly, and in fact, continues to lose market share to polyester fiber.

Biaxial polyamide film in China expected to grow by 12-15%

Polyamide, commonly known as Nylon, can provide excellent barrier properties, leading to good growth of biaxial oriented film made from polyamide, particularly in China. One estimate for the next few years, puts the average growth at 12-15% for China, about 2% in Japan and 2-3% for the rest of the Asian countries. BOPA film is therefore growing at about 5-6% in Asia.

Multi shot molding improves product quality

Multi shot molding is a process in which a number of separate material shots are used to produce the final product. Movement of the molding tool and the molded part can allow two, three and even four-shot processes. Multi shot molding is also called in mold assembly, because the resulting part consists of two or more pieces made of different materials that would normally be joined in a downstream assembly operation.

A chain extender that can restore reclaimed condensation polymers

Condensation polymers like PET, polyamide and polycarbonate tend to degrade during processing. Degradation is caused by a loss of molecular weight, which leads to loss of important material properties, especially melt strength and processability. The result is that recycled and reclaimed material of these types are often limited to applications that do not require high performance properties or, even worse, are rejected as unusable waste.
